The Social Network

This weeks topic was discussing copyright. Copyright is defined as the exclusive and assignable legal right, given to the originator for a fixed number of years, to print, publish, perform, film, or record literary, artistic, or musical material.

I want to talk about the movie ‘The Social Network’ and discuss how this is a prime example of the topic of copyright.

The Social Network film (2010) is a film based on the life of computing expert Mark Zuckerberg. It follows the lines of his creation of Facebook, which leads to becoming the worlds largest social network.

Here is a trailer from the film:

The storyline of copyright comes into play in this film, as he is being accused of stealing the concept and ideas that is Facebook. Mark is faced with lawsuits, when mark receives a cease and desist letter, stating that mark stole the Winklevoss twin’s facebook idea, which is intellectual property theft.

Heres a video discussing this:

Copyright is very important as it covers bases. One line in Marks court hearing states ‘“If you had invented Facebook, you would have invented Facebook,”. Mark said this dismissing the twins and their allegations. This movie highlights the importance of copyright. Food for thought, If Mark Zuckerberg had taken any notice of the twins cease and desist letter, Facebook may not have even ever taken off.

  1. Awesome use of real-life examples! I think it really demonstrates your understanding of the concept by being able to link it closely to modern pop culture and movies. It goes to show how prevalent copyright issues are in our culture. I’ll have to go give this movie a watch!
